What is the difference between a detached bottom zipper and a closed bottom zipper?

Apr 15,2024 BSL

We start with the detached bottom zipper. These zippers are mainly used in scenarios where the two sides of the zipper need to be completely separated, such as the closure of a jacket. The two key components responsible for the connection are called the "pin" and the "box." Insert the pin into the box to attach the zipper and pull up on the slider to close it. Here are a few key points to note about breakaway bottom zippers:

Broken Pin or Box: Repairing a broken or detached pin or box on a breakaway zipper is a challenging task. Our pins and boxes are secured to the zipper tape using specialized machinery. Trying to reconnect them manually often results in repeated corruption.

Shorten the breakaway bottom zipper: If you need to shorten the breakaway bottom zipper, avoid cutting the pins and box. Always shorten the zipper from the top by removing the top stop. Once removed, it is impossible to reconnect.

Let’s take a look at what the bottom zipper looks like. These zippers are used when the zipper wants to remain intact without separating, such as in the fly of pants. The bottom stop is used to prevent the slider from separating from the zipper chain. This is a simple zipper that serves its purpose effectively without too much fuss. However, there is one key point to remember:

Converting a closed bottom zipper to a detached bottom zipper: It is not possible to convert a closed bottom zipper to a detached bottom zipper. We once had a customer who mistakenly ordered a 20-inch closed-bottom zipper and later requested it be converted to a split-bottom zipper. Unfortunately, we had to tell them that this switch was not feasible. Although disappointing, lessons were learned and future orders are more thoughtful.
